Esta experiencia siempre me impresionó muchísimo y me puso a reflexionar sobre la condición deplorable de nuestro sistema de salud: el recurso humano no es suficiente, aunque de calidad, pero la infraestructura y los recursos médicos del país dejan mucho qué desear”. Y cumplió su deseo, se graduó de Pediatra.
Quiso ser intensivista durante el segundo año de residencia al estar en la rotación, en el Departamento de Intensivo Pediátrico. Siempre le llamó la atención. Tomar la decisión fue fácil, lo difícil fue lograr el espacio en algún hospital y lo logró, en Miami.

Uno de sus mayores retos fue tomar la decisión de irse de Guatemala a especializarse en los Estados Unidos y dejar a su familia y amigos. “Extraño la convivencia diaria y odio perderme los momentos especiales de sus vidas. Otra gran dificultad ha sido aprender a manejar la presión que conlleva estar en un departamento intensivo: el lidiar con la muerte siempre me va a costar, especialmente cuando se trata de niños”.
A pesar de los obstáculos, se siente responsable de ofrecer apoyo médico profesional a los más pequeños en sus momentos de enfermedad, así como soporte emocional a sus familias. Para Gloria “resulta una oportunidad ilimitada de servicio. No me detengo a pensar en el impacto. En estos últimos dos años, he conocido madres y padres de todas partes, incluso vienen de Guatemala. Si he de ser sincera, lo que sí tengo claro es el impacto que mi trabajo tiene en MI vida.
